ABSTRACT ART: “Abstract” just means something that’s difficult to understand because it doesn’t look like what it represents. We’ve all experienced art that make us turn our heads sideways and say “huh?” Whether it’s visual art, poetry, music, sculpture, dance – anything that’s hard to figure out at first – once you discover the key to understanding it, you can unlock important mysteries not only in art, but also in the world around you. Some people are abstract; although we call them other names like different, weird, nerd, odd, misfit, loner – they’re just difficult to understand at first. Often, abstract people are especially interesting. It’s so worth taking the time to unlock the mystery of who they really are, or having someone unlock the mystery of who we really are. We can live in a tiny world, afraid of anything different, or we can learn to explore a larger, far richer world by unlocking the abstract. LANGUAGE AS ART: The better we communicate, the more likely we are to get what we want and to deliver on what’s asked of us. Some people are good with words and enjoy speaking and writing. Others suffer through anything to do with language. Either way, we all must learn basic language skills in order to get through life. Using words as an artistic medium – like paint or music – is a different, often liberating exercise. Creative writing involves following some rules and breaking others in order to say only what feels right to the artist without concern for who is going to understand the finished work. This kind of writing lets anyone – from young children to the barely literate to non-native speakers to seasoned wordsmiths – use everything, from the simplest sounds and syllables, to create poetry, songs or prose. Creative writing often surprises the writer with its personal meaning and mystery.
