CULTURE: Whatever we grow up with becomes the foundation of our sense of family culture. But each group of people in school, the workplace, each club, association or society also has its own culture. We have to decide which cultures we want to be a part of and what we’re willing to do to belong. Some groups elevate and support us. Others destroy us. Understanding the influence of different cultures, from sacred ancestry to predatory gangs, is essential in defining who we are and who we refuse to become to please others and maintain our integrity. MAKING THINGS RIGHT: In an effort to belong and feel accepted, most of us compromise ourselves one way or another and have painful regrets. The humiliation isn’t without purpose. It teaches us compassion for others who’ve crossed lines while searching for self-worth. Learning to forgive ourselves and others is one of life’s most valuable exercises. It removes the illusion that being perfect is the only worthy goal in life (it isn’t even realistic), while teaching humility and wisdom. What we learn from practicing genuine forgiveness over our lifetime will serve us well when it comes time to deal with death – either our own or the loss of people we love.
